We hear "stroke" and instantly picture an elderly relative in a rural hospital bed, or someone's uncle who "overworked." But what if we spoke about stroke the way we talk about weekend plans, gym routines, or traffic on Thika Road, like something that actually touches real people around us?
Because stroke isn't this distant medical event waiting at old age. It's quietly sitting in our circles, our workplaces, our homes, sometimes in people who look perfectly fine.
Last Sunday started like any other chilled day. I wasn't sick, just tired from a long week. I left the house late, grabbed breakfast at a café, and sat near a man who looked like he was having a normal conversation with his family. Laughing, passing salt, arguing about parking fees, just life.
Then suddenly, his right hand slipped off the table. His speech changed, not dramatic, just slightly twisted like he was chewing words. His family froze, unsure if it was a joke or exhaustion.
He tried to stand, but one side of his body wasn't cooperating.
Someone rushed to get water (as we always do), another insisted he just needed rest. But a lady on the next table quietly whispered, "This looks like stroke. Call an ambulance. Now."
It took seconds. And in those seconds, I realised how easily we brush off symptoms because they don't come with sirens and drama.
Stroke doesn't always appear dramatically, sometimes it shows up quietly through slurred speech, numbness, sudden dizziness, or an uneven smile, signs we often dismiss as fatigue, hunger, or dehydration. Yet every minute during a stroke counts, with delays potentially determining whether someone recovers fully or faces permanent disability. Remember the acronym F.A.S.T. (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to get help) and avoid "waiting it out" or taking painkillers instead of seeking urgent medical attention. Health issues don't always arrive loudly, so pay attention to subtle symptoms, monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol, and stop assuming youth protects you—serious conditions don't wait for old age.
