lactation positions: supporting effective breastfeeding

Many mothers need support with positioning their baby for breastfeeding and making sure their baby is correctly attached.

To help you both make the most of breastfeeding, here are some positions to try;

The right position can make breastfeeding more comfortable and effective.

1. CRADLE POSITION

The baby lies on their side with their head in the crook of your arm (elbow area), with their body facing you and your chest.

Best for: Full-term newborns, older infants, and daytime feeds.

2. CROSS-CRADLE POSITION

Similar to cradle position, but you use the opposite arm to support the baby (left breast = right arm and vice versa).

Best for: Newborns who are having trouble latching and preemies.

3. UNDER-ARM/RUGBY POSITION

The baby is tucked under your arm like a football, with legs pointing behind you.

Best for: Moms with large breasts, flat or inverted nipples, C-sections, or twins.

4. SIDE-LYING POSITION

You and the baby lie on your sides facing each other with your baby’s mouth parallel to the nipple. You can hold your baby by their back so they can get close enough to latch and the baby's nose is not obstructed.

Best for: Night feeds or recovery after C-section.

5. RECLINING POSITION

You recline comfortably, supporting your back with pillows. The baby lies prone on your chest and finds the nipple naturally.

Best for: Newborns and optimal skin-to-skin contact.
