Every great society begins with informed youth. As the world evolves, so do the health challenges facing young people. From mental health struggles to nutrition gaps and misinformation around sexual and reproductive health, it has become clear: health education for youth is not optional, it's essential.
In celebration of World Youth Skills Day, we partnered with health professionals, educators, and youth leaders to host an interactive workshop focused on empowering young individuals with critical health knowledge and skills. In this post, we'll take you through the highlights, key lessons, and practical tips from this impactful session.
Young people between the ages of 10 and 24 make up over 25% of the global population. Yet, many remain uninformed about basic health practices, disease prevention, and mental well-being.
Without early access to reliable, age-appropriate health information, they are at risk of:
"Health education equips youth not only with information but with the confidence to make informed decisions," says Dr. Susan Mboya, a public health educator who spoke at the workshop.
Held in Nairobi in conjunction with youth advocacy organizations and supported by Zuri Health, our workshop brought together over 150 young participants from schools, universities, and community centers.
Let's break down each session and the key takeaways.
Mental health remains one of the most misunderstood and stigmatized topics among youth. During the session, certified therapists led interactive group activities to break the silence around anxiety, depression, and peer pressure.
Many young attendees downloaded mental wellness apps and were encouraged to book virtual consultations through platforms like Zuri Health for confidential support.
This session was designed to demystify myths surrounding puberty, menstruation, contraception, and STIs.
"Comprehensive SRH education is not about encouraging early sexual activity, it's about safety, respect, and informed choices," emphasized Dr. Angela Ochieng', a gynecologist with Zuri Health.
Young people often underestimate the importance of balanced diets and hydration, especially with the popularity of fast food, energy drinks, and crash diets.
Attendees received sample weekly meal plans and learned how to prepare affordable, nutritious meals even on a student budget.
In a world flooded with TikTok trends and YouTube "health hacks," digital literacy is crucial. Youth were taught how to identify credible health sources and avoid misinformation.
"The internet can be your friend or your foe, learn how to use it wisely," advised James Otieno, a tech and health integration expert.
Participants were encouraged to become peer health educators, spreading awareness within their schools and communities. Leadership and communication workshops were included to build skills in:
Every attendee received a certificate of participation, empowering them to serve as health ambassadors.
"This was the first time I felt comfortable asking questions about my body and mental health. I learned a lot!" – Faith, 17.
"Now I know where to find real doctors online. Thank you, Zuri Health." – Brian, 21.
It empowers them with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions, prevent diseases, and lead healthier lives.
Zuri Health offers private, virtual consultations with licensed medical professionals. It's a safe and discreet way to get help.
Mental health conditions, substance abuse, poor nutrition, and lack of SRH education are among the top concerns.
Start by attending workshops, joining school health clubs, and getting trained in peer education programs.
Health education is more than just information, it's empowerment.
Young people deserve the tools to take charge of their well-being, challenge harmful myths, and build a generation rooted in knowledge, confidence, and resilience.
Workshops like this show that when we invest in youth health education, we create ripple effects that benefit entire communities.
